Life Is What Happens From Point A To Point B

Street photography by Craig Boehman.

Very often for me, life is what happens between Point A and Point B. I was having this thought this morning while editing my latest batch of street photos from a walk I did yesterday from my flat to nearby Orlem, and then up north along Link Road. I realized it's a paraphrase of John Lennon's "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans" lyric from his song, "Beautiful Boy."

I prefer Lennon's phrasing because it's more poetic. But for me, there's a distinction to be made between the two phrasings. I've been forging my life along the lines of making Point A to Point B an event for photographing street photography. If I've got chores to do, I'll bring my camera. Even if it's on a pointless stroll, I'll bring my camera along and see what happens. A lot of you know I also photograph from rickshaws whenever I get the opportunity whenever I'm traveling around Mumbai. This is all Point A to Point B stuff. But contrary to Lennon's meaning, it's all about planning.

But it's not the kind of planning that one can set his watch to. It's more like Tarantino-like planning when the narrative is anything but straight forward. That is to say, I'm planning on "seeing what happens when I bring my camera along."

Sure, it may sound a little wishy-washy. But many of my images are captured under such circumstances. And in many cases, such shots aren't always possible when you try to "force the scene." You have to let things play out and be very fast to get the shot, especially if you're shooting a lot of candid images as I do.

For better or for worse, life on the streets of Mumbai has returned almost fully, if not more full than ever. As far as I can tell, the new way forward is to "wear a mask and hope for the best." I'm done with sitting on my ass during this pandemic.
